Spring 2011 Grants


'Unity is Harmony' - $500 will commission music by Shepherd Hill alumnus and UMass graduate Thomas Wilson. The work will be performed for the public by the Charlton Middle School, Dudley Middle School & Shepherd Hill bands in early 2012.

Shepherd Hill

Environmental Testing Using Vernier Sensors- The purchase of testing equipment will afford greater club participation to analyze local soil and water samples. The equipment will also be used in regular science classes.            Spiewak Family Grant

Smart Music - Funding will purchase equipment and annual subscriptions and licenses for access to over 30,000 song files and 50,000 exercises. Software will provide immediate and documented feedback on individual student performances, measuring pitch and rhythm.

Dudley Elementary

ELMOS: Enhanced Learning & Metacognition Opportunities for Students.-Three document cameras will be purchased for students to study minerals, view maps, construct math tables, and much more

Dudley Middle School

Mentoring Program - The mentoring program will be enhanced to include a summer confidence camp so that students stay engaged and connected to DMS over the summer.

Reading Advancements - To enhance the reading program, a variety of books on DVD as well as listening devices will be purchased so students may listen as they read along themselves. An ELMO (document camera) will assist the teacher in facilitating discussions about the books students read.

Heritage School

 Reading Room - A collection of leveled books will be purchased to support instruction across the curriculum at each grade level.

Charlton Middle School

Math Review and Gifted Math Project - The sharing of four iPads will further provide differentiated instruction in the upper grades.




Fall 2011 Grants

Shepherd Hill

Shepherd Hill teacher Karen Higgins was awarded a grant for a Family Writing Evening. Students and family members will be invited to attend an evening writing together, sharing memories, while observing the writing process.

Michele Ganger and Karen Higgins received a grant to expand opportunities of general education and students in the school's STRIVE program to interact socially. General education students will gain experience to help evaluate a path of pursuing studies in special education.

Mason Road School

JoEllen Dean celebrates receiving her grant for 3 ELMO document cameras and projectors, one for each grade, with the entire Mason Rd student body. With this new teaching tool, teachers will be able to easier present information to students and bring lessons to life.

Heritage School

Cynthia Rawson, art teacher at Heritage School, was awarded a grant for her project to relocate the art room to the original atrium space in the school and create a 'Visual Arts Studio' environment to enhance student learning and inspire creativity. The grant will pay for individual art work stations as part of transforming the space. ps And this was a very creative day at Heritage school as many students supported Spirit Week Mis-Match Day with some 'interesting' attire.

Charlton Middle School

6th grade teacher Anna Hill at Charlton Middle School will use her grant to work with her students to produce a World Fair at the end of the school year after students on Teams 6-1 & 6-2 study past World Fairs and their resulting inventions, new technology, architectural impacts,and foods. Students on teams 6-3 & 6-4 and families will be invited to attend.

Natalie Morris, Life Skills instructor at Charlton Middle School was awarded a grant for her project 'Families in Focus & Fabric. Students will study family structure and transfer that knowledge to items they will create with photo transfers on material sewn into various family heirloom items.

Dudley Middle School

Adrienne Schur at Dudley Middle School will use her grant for an ELMO document camera and projector. The ELMO will allow her to use what she's learned from Math Learning Communities in her classroom, enhancing classroom match instruction.


Rebecca Patterson will use her grant award to 'Connect Rm 302 Worldwide'. She'll use an ELMO document camera and two iPads to bring new methods of instruction to her science and math lessons.
